When putting up traditional horse fence (posts and wire mesh horse fencing), how far to put the posts? | |
We will be using 4 ft. fencing and posts.
Answers:
1In warm climates the posts can be set a minimum of 2½ ft. deep. I'm in Indiana and we usually set them at 3ft. due to frost heaving. A word of caution on the woven wire fence for horses..make it visible! If the open "squares" are 4" or larger in size, a horse could get a hoof caught! An 8ft. post sunk 3 ft. with the 4ft. wire will have a 1ft. top to paint or attach something to for visibility (make sure it's something a horse can digest). We tied some rags onto the wire fence so the horses could see the fence for a month or so, after that they knew where it was, but we still monitored the foals. We also painted the top 1ft white and red. The link below has pretty good advice. Good Luck, fence stringing is hard work!
