pertaining to a 6 foot wooden fence, does it matter which side faces out toward the neighbors yard?

usually when building a wooden fence the 4x4's or posts are on the inside or your yard side of the fence, with the clean side of the fence facing your neighbor.it's for cosmetic reasons also(curb appeal).
