Do electric fences continually shock dogs or do they just give them on brief shock when they cross the fence?

1Just a brief shock..just al little more than touching your tongue to a 9 volt battery to see of it is alive..Unless it is an above ground fence..then it is quite a jolt, but dosn't casue harm..believe me, I have touched a lot of them..lol

the underground fence is tested, by wearring or holding the collar, and walking along the fence line...
