changing chain link to wood privace etiquette

Our backyard is fenced on all sides with chain link. All three of our neighbors that we share the fences with also have chain link fenced backyards. We want to build a wood privacy fence. Should we just build it right against the exisiting chain link fence or are we supposed to consult with the neighbors to possibly replace the chain link with the wood fence? Of course removing the chain link will endure extra cost, so should we be responsible for the entire cost or removal? Any advice is appreciated.
