· When applying the stain onto the fence, carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions. Each stain has certain conditions which can cause failure, and the manufacturer has listed those conditions in his instructions. Some conditions may be:
· Temperature – don’t stain if the room temperature falls below 52°F.
· Rain – Give the stain 48 for it to dry appropriately and form a powerful bond.
· Traffic – set drying time aside.
· Mixing - Pigment or opaque stains – just like paint are once mixed, and stay mixed, which will allow for the even color to remain from beginning to end. Dye based stains or semi-transparent will require more mixing during the application to maintain the even color all across the space.
· The best style for application which staining your fence is by a stain roller and brush.
· Do not go for spray based application is it will not distribute the stain evenly and keeping dye based stains well mixed in a container is difficult. Pigment based stains often clog its nozzle, so you may spend more time unclogging it, and not staining the project.
Start from the top and work your way to the bottom – using the brush for the less accessible parts and the roller for the other ones.
