How to repair a fence gate? | |
Pulling up a sagging gate
· Reinstall the gate-hinge screws which are coming out. First, remove the screws which hold the bottom hinge onto the post and second, remove the top screws. Take the gate off.
· Using wood putty, fill the holes.
· Put the top hinge first, and then the bottom one. Use screws which are longer and do not come out on the other side.
· Perhaps, add another third hinge in between for support.
· Using a level, check and see if your gate is level across and plumb at its end.
· If your gate sags, install the turnbuckle tension rod assembly onto opposite corners. Be sure the high end of the cable is put on the gate side with hinges.
· Tighten this turnbuckle as the gate becomes level and properly clears the ground.
Making the gate close smoothly
· With a level check and make sure the wing of the gate that has the latch and adjacent post are plumb. Straighten those two if required.
· Cut a part of the wood if it touches the ground in wet weather.
· If the latch cannot reach its catch in drier weather because of wood contraction, remove it and reposition so that it can easily reach the catch.
